The Shops of Summerhill

The redevelopment of The Shops of Summerhill is a multiphase commercial project, comprised of a contemporary addition to a series of historical commercial buildings on Yonge Street in Rosedale. The design of the addition takes cues from the adjacent context, using a material palette that is found in the surrounding buildings. In this addition, however, the stone and masonry are treated in a much more contemporary fashion. Taking cues from the existing structures, the new addition also features modulated thresholds between the public and semi-public spaces. As the design architect for the project, Audax worked closely with the client in facilitating and negotiating tenant leases and fit outs. The prime tenant for the development is Terroni Restaurant, who occupies an Italian café and bar space on the ground level and a main restaurant space on the second level. An extensive rooftop terrace offers restaurant goers prime views of Toronto’s iconic Summerhill train station. The redevelopment of the Shops of Summerhill provided a unique opportunity to create an urban environment which promoted pedestrian activity and interaction throughout the site.
