The Shops of Summerhill

The redevelopment of The Shops of Summerhill was a multiphase commercial project, comprised of a contemporary addition to a series of historic commercial buildings on Yonge Street in Rosedale. The design of the addition took cues from the adjacent context, using a material palette drawn from the surrounding buildings. In this addition, however, the stone and masonry are treated in a distinctly contemporary manner. Taking cues from the existing structures, the new addition also featured modulated thresholds between the public and semi-public spaces.

As the design architect for the project, Audax worked closely with the client to facilitate and negotiate tenant leases and fit-outs. The prime tenant for the development is Terroni Restaurant, which occupies an Italian café and bar space on the ground level and a main restaurant space on the second level. An extensive rooftop terrace offers guests prime views of Toronto’s iconic Summerhill train station.

The redevelopment of the Shops of Summerhill created a unique opportunity to create an urban environment, which promotes pedestrian activity and interaction throughout the site.
